James Trory, 30, originally from England, is a freelance photographer living in Astoria, N.Y. He has been denied health-care coverage in the United States for Type 1 diabetes because it’s considered a pre-existing condition. James requires several insulin injections and daily blood tests. The expenses to maintain his diabetes is about $750 a month, which he is barely able to afford in addition to his other bills. When James lived in England, he benefited from the public health-care system. All of his medication and doctors visits were covered, and he had the option of purchasing private insurance if he desired.
